Eight Miata’s with a total of 13 drivers and passengers, embarked out of Phoenix Saturday morning, with gray skies and the threat of rain looming overhead. There is nothing like these sporty cars weaving in and out of traffic heading north on I-17 turning many a head in what is surely a bit of envy! Yes, it rained, it misted, roads were wet… and our Miata desert inhabitants, relished the cooler, gray scenery!
First gathering spot was in Cottonwood. Then we wound our way up the snaking tight road past the old mining areas, houses perched on the hillsides, and maybe even a ghost or two, as we paraded through the tiny mountain town of Jerome. Continuing up and over Mingus Mountain, the clouds hung low, the trees were green, the road was curvy as we slowed behind other cars, dodging fallen rock pieces and pot holes in the road. We settled into our lunch seats on the other side of the mountain, at the Casa Bonita restaurant located at the Prescottonian Hotel in Prescott.
With bellys full, we still had some great mountain driving ahead. Heading out of Prescott and down the twisting White Spar and across the high meadows of People’s Valley. Lastly driving down Yarnell mountain to the straight a-ways into Wickenburg. Back to the warmer, thicker air of home!
